Question Fire Hydrants

Does anyone know who is responsible for clearing around the fire hydrants from snow? Is it the homeowner's responsiblity, the fire departments or the parks & rec or some fire hydrant fairy?

As I drove around town today, I saw a lot of hydrants that in the case of a fire would take a bit of work to get close enough to connect to.

Just like your sidewalks.. Its the homeowner's responsibility... Now there is no fine (at least I dont think there is) if the city has to come out and shovel out your hydrant. Its more of a courtesy for the Fire Department so they can do their job as quick as possible.

They say once a fire has started it doubles in size every 5 minutes. So would you rather have the fire department using those 5 minutes digging out a hydrant to use or being able to hook right away to fight the fire and put it out.

It's definetly the homeowner or renters responsibility! It is imperitive to get it done you don't want the firefighters to have to take time to dig out the hydrant before they can start pumping water to your home! Once again the word volunteer comes into play, they can't possibly clear all the hydrants in town.

My Hubby cleans out all the way around the one on my block and its not even in my yard. My idiot neighbor pushs snow up to it. That should warrant a ticket in my opinion. They need to be kept clear even if it's not in your yard, help in getting them opened up!

I just noticed during my drive to Fareway that the whole trip at each Fire Hydrant we passed, it was surrounded by snow. Even in the City's Park & Rec maintenance office. I just remember that the City of Ames asked citizens to help by clearing around them 3' to ensure public safety.

We do keep the area around the "green box" in our yard clear of snow, as much as possible. But my husband loves to move snow.
