Default Shop Small this holiday season

The holidays are right around the corner and local shops are ready to welcome guests throughout the festive season. Kicking off the traditional shopping season, Black Friday leads into Shop Small Saturday giving community members the change to support the local businesses.

"The DDNA members considered ways to offer a fun holiday shopping experience this year; the resulting Live Reindeer on the Friday night after Thanksgiving and Strolling Santa during Shop Small Saturday are family friendly events that add cheer and follow distance guidelines. Newton specialty shops are following precautions and offering curbside pick up, delivery and online ordering capabilities," Destination Downtown Newton Alliance member and Olive 'et Boutique owner Vicki Wade said.

Starting Friday, downtown Newton will have activities to check out including live reindeer at 5 p.m. across from US Bank and Plaid Friday, where shoppers can show off their favorite plaid pieces in support of local businesses. Saturday features the Santa Stroll from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa will be "strolling" around downtown Newton with a jolly wave for guests. He will also be having a youth story time at Book Trader at 11 a.m. and a photo time from 2 to 3 p.m. at Relics.

A new event to look out for is the Spirit of the Season Online Auction. Twelve baskets, each filled with gifts and gift certificates valued at $50 or more, will be auctioned off in a partnership with US Bank, Discover Hope and DDNA. Check out the DDNA Facebook page for more details.

Many businesses will have great deals on the retail holiday featuring unique gifts not often found at nationwide chains. Shop owners invite everyone to stop by the check out discounts and special sales throughout the gift-giving season.

The holiday spirit can be found throughout the county and Colfax is no exception. The local businesses will be busy with adding a little sparkle and spice, welcoming guests in the busy shopping season.

"We want to encourage you to support our local businesses during this holiday season after this rough economic year. So mask up, grab your hand sanitizer and come shop in Downtown Colfax this weekend," Colfax Main Street Director Stuart Patterson said.

The local stores will be celebrating by giving out $5 Colfax Bucks for the first $25 a customer spends, redeemable at participating Colfax Businesses. Spend $25 at multiple shops and collect Colfax Bucks along the way.

"This weekend is also the Back Road Junk It Trail Holiday Trail which many of our stores will be participating in. Many of our stores are stocking up on great holiday items so you can find the perfect gift," Patterson said. "Colfax Main Street strongly advises and encourages wearing masks, hand sanitizing, washing hands and maintaining six feet of distance while shopping in Downtown Colfax to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. You may be required to wear a mask inside certain businesses or may be asked to wait to enter a business because of safe capacity limitations. Please be responsible and do you part to protect business owners, the community and yourself."

Twice Blessed in Prairie City will also have wide variety of items available, including many winter and holiday themed pieces. Check out of the retail shop on the downtown square along with all of the shops throughout Jasper County for fun one-of-kind gifts for on of the most memorable holiday seasons.
