Default Newton man arrested for domestic abuse assault

A forty-four-year-old man remains in custody after allegedly hitting a woman after accusing her of having an affair.

Michael J. Sams, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness and violation of a no contact order or protective order at 9:36 p.m. Nov. 24 in the 900 block of North Sixth Avenue East.

According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched in reference to a domestic assault. Upon arrival, police observed a male, identified as the Sams, on top of a female victim, through the front door window. Officers ordered Sams off the victim and for him to come to the front door, which he did. Newton police detained Sams and entered the apartment. Newton police observed the victim lying on the floor in the bedroom doorway and saw blood on the victimís face, a large lump above the victimís left eye and brushing on both sides of the victimís face.

The victim stated she had returned home from getting food from a neighbor when Sams got upset and accused the victim of having an affair with that person. The victim said Sams then struck her in the face and head multiple times while in the bedroom. Thatís when the victimís oldest son came into the bedroom and struck Sams in the back of the head in an attempt to stop the defendant from assaulting the victim. Then, Sams shoved her son and both of the victimís teenage children left the apartment.

The victim said Sams then got on top of her and held her down until Newton police arrived. Sams admitted to holding the victim down but denied striking her.

Same remains at the Jasper County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He appeared at his pre-trial conference at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2.
