Are patrons allowed to walk around the entire time if they want?

Of course. Sit out in your lawn chairs, walk around, a lot of people bring balls, Frisbees, kids running around in the grassy areas, laying on blankets, sometimes on top of the cars, in the back of vans and trucks. A few year back I seen some kids tied a couch to the top of their car and put it on the ground and sat in it watching the movies.
BBQ grills are not allowed for safety reasons.

How did that work out? Was it a mess?

I didn't go and havn't heard anything about it. That is something I liked, a double feature, 2 for 1. $7.50/head is a fairly cheap night out. Its the concession that is expensive, so bring your own.

Are they o.k. with people bringing their own food or do you have to smuggle it in and hide it?

No problem, bring anything you want, food, drink, beer.
No grilling. That's a safety problem.
