Default Work to begin at Barton housing division

Preliminary work is looking to get underway on the Barton property at the Fairmeadows North housing subdivision. The Newton City Council will have an agreement with Bolton & Menk for surveying services on the agenda for the regular Monday meeting.

In a partnership with the Newton Housing Development Corporation, the city looked to further expand the Fairmeadows North residential subdivision with the purchase of approximately 71 acres in December. In that area, there is the potential for 155 new housing lots for the community.

Prior to any subdivision platting, preliminary survey information is needed to prepare concept or staging plans for initial plat layouts. The proposal for Bolton & Menk includes a topographic survey of the Barton property for $6,800 and a preliminary boundary survey for $3,400. This initial survey work would encompass the entire 71 acres, which will reduce the need or extent of future site surveys as later stages of the 71 acre parcel are platted and developed.

The council will also have a contract for the demolition of several Dangerous and Dilapidated Program before it on Monday. At a cost of $129,744, Con-Struct of Marshalltown submitted the lowest bid to complete the work.

The properties included in the demolition project include 523 and 525 W. Fourth St. S. and 319 and 321 E. Eighth St. South. Plans and specification for all properties including abatement are a part of the final bid.

Looking toward warmer weather months, the council will have agreements for the 2018 Summer Concert Series at the Maytag Bowl and the Fourth of July activities at Agnes Patterson Park to approve.

The concert series will be held on Thursdays running from May 31 through August 2, with no concert scheduled for, July 5. Eight acts have been identified for the Maytag Bowl concerts and Faculty Lounge is scheduled to perform on July 4 for the holiday celebration.
