Question Mom-and-pop restaurants

I was in Ankeny last week during the lunch hour. There were numerous chain restaurants but I couldn't find anything that looked like a long-established mom-and-pop restaurant.

Are there any in Ankeny?

There used to be a place called Baer's, or something similar. I don't know if it is still around.

Rent and taxes are too high for many of them anymore.

Bears is still there the 300-block of South Maple, and right next to it is the Yankee Clipper....both serve food, and on Tuesdays, the Clipper serves better tacos than Tasty Tacos. If you go for lunch though, better get there early, the place fills up around noon!

Bear's is a great Ankeny staple and so is the Clipper. You can also check out Benchwarmers on Hwy 69 and for dinner look for Ranallo's in downtown Ankeny. The Pub and Grub on south Hwy 69 is also a local that used to be a restaurant called Traditions but it's been several different names over the years. Papa Chubby's BBQ on Oralabor Road is also a local favorite as is China Moon just down the street. Basically, get yourself off Delaware Avenue and you'll find all kinds of interesting things to do in Ankeny.

I tried to have supper at Bears last night but they were closed and the building was for sale. I think Denny Elwell owns it.

Their mostly gone, so many people thought they could make a living at it, and they did for a while, but unless you're the only store in town out of luck. So many franchises coming in getting tax rebates, government loans and free grants, Mom and Pop can't compete with all the free money out there. Sometimes one dies and there's no help.
My little thing is for sale, I can't do it alone. I hope this is my last year and I can enjoy retirement.
